Religion does have a good site: charities and disaster relief, alcohol and drug abuse education institutions, schools (there are and were many schools in different parts of the world supported by religious organizations), supportive community. Some religions (including Jehovah's Witnesses) help marginalized people to enter the workplace or the job market, to quit smoking or drugs. Religions all over the world spent a lot of money on actually helping people in their, very real, problems. Why am I so against it, then?

Did I gain something from religion?

In nearly all negative experiences there are positive aspects. I used to be a minority that is often misunderstood. I know how such people feel and can potentially help others or at least notice them and treat them like I would want to be treated. I learned how to defend my values (which incidentally weren't always mine). I memorized many parts of the Bible, spent time thinking about my life and goals that I want to accomplish, I learned how to speak in front of an audience, how to put my thoughts into words and how to talk to strangers. I was able to learn from people from different cultures, hear their stories. I spoke to people that struggle with poverty, alcoholism and other difficulties and I was able to help them, albeit in a very limited way. I have, deep in me, planted hatred for war, violence and nationalism which is still in harmony with my moral compass (but now for completely different reasons). I avoided alcoholism, drug addiction, STDs (although attributing this to religion is not supported by statistics - more about research on this topic in the future article).

And, I think, the most important advantage I have is that I know exactly how it is to be raised in a religious cult, to struggle with cognitive dissonance and finally to leave it and face consequences. As much as I fell pain because of it, it gave me some unique opportunities. Now I can help others, I can take part in informing the public about the religion's practices. I better understand the importance of a freedom of thought and freedom in general. I learned how to recognize logical fallacies and manipulation techniques. And, just by leaving, I may have helped some of my fellow believers look at their religion differently. And finally being Jehovah's Witness most of my life defined me. Without it I would be someone else and who knows what that person would be like?

Are 'good parts' relevant?

They may be relevant for you. To avoid bitterness, hate or to deal with resentment that may make it difficult to go on with your life after leaving the group that harmed you. You may still cherish pleasant memories and be thankful for people that gave you their love and support within the group, even if you now see the flaws in the way they did it. As it may be helpful with your emotional health it will not remove the harm and make the abusive organization less abusive. Remembering about good parts of the situation you've been through is something completely different than justification of the atrocities or detracting from the seriousness of abuse done by the organization.

Let us think about the story of Natascha Kampusch. She has been kidnapped at the age of ten and kept in a cellar by her kidnapper. She managed to escape after eight years. She spent most of the time in that cellar or inside the house, very rarely going out (obviously only with the kidnapper). He 'would beat her so badly she could hardly walk' and 'starve her to make her physically weak'. One of the things she said was: 'I spared myself many things, I did not start smoking or drinking and I did not hang out in bad company'. Think about it: is the fact of the positive side effects (like not smoking) change anything? Should the kidnapper be thanked for sparing her 'bad association'? Should we defend him saying that he has also done something good for her? Can you imagine anyone, supporting kidnapping children so that they will not get an STD? If ISIS engaged in charitable activities, would you praise or defend that organization because of that? Are 'good parts' relevant?

Positive 'side effects'

Many alcoholics became Jehovah's Witnesses and do not drink anymore. People were violent and became gentle like a sheep after joining. Did they become more moral, emotionally healthier? As JW, when you do (or even think) something wrong then the guilt cycle begins. You are pushed back to religious activities to redeem yourself, often you are obliged to tell the elders (or other church officials) about wrongdoing which in turn cause tremendous feel of shame. The effect of this is the strong incentive not to drink, not to beat your wife, not to steal, not to lie, not to accept homosexuality, not to accept blood transfusion. But these rules does not make you a better person. They make you a captive of fear, shame and guilt.

Other aspect of 'good things' are charities, disaster relief initiatives and the like. As much as I'm supportive of such actions with my whole heart, these are still minuscule efforts in comparison to the amount of time, money and effort the religions put into their religious activities. Secular institutions that spend nearly all of their resources on actually helping people are much better suited for that work and use their money, or time much more efficiently. People who are part of Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, Amnesty International and other secular initiatives are well trained for the job they are doing and are not biased or bound by the certain ideology. It's hard to imagine, for most of the religions, that they will fight with scientific illiteracy and pseudo science at schools[1] or for LGBT rights[2].

Summary

So to summarize: I see the positive aspects of religious activity. Ignoring them completely would be unfair and in some cases, unhealthy. But I consider them either a side effects of harmful ideology or irrelevant in view of abuse. All of the good any religion has ever done, can be achieved without the burden of ideology, without that harm and abuse. And that is why I am against the religion and religious-like ideologies.
